A STUDENT had his head stamped on during a robbery as he walked through a subway complex in Burnley, a court heard.

Michael Conway had left Burnley College and was walking towards the town centre when he was approached by two men, with one of them asking him the time, the town’s crown court was told.

He pulled out his mobile phone to check the time and became the victim of a sustained attack, the court heard.

Roger Brown, prosecuting, said eyewitnesses saw the student being kicked and stamped on while he was on the ground and came to his aid. The witnesses said he had been quite severely beaten and appeared to be confused.

He was taken by ambulance to hospital and it was discovered his mobile phone, wallet, passport and bank cards were taken during the robbery.

An investigation was launched by police and it was found that a new Sim card had been inserted into Mr Conway’s mobile, which led them to Mohammed Miah.

Mr Brown said Mr Miah informed them that he had been offered the mobile phone by Sheikh Juned.

He tried his SIM card in the phone but was unsure about whether to purchase it. He became suspicious when Juned came back later and tried to sell him the phone for a lower price.

Juned was arrested later and insisted he knew nothing about the robbery, jurors were told.

But Mr Conway later picked out Juned during an identification parade, the court heard.

Mr Conway was sent an anonymous message via Facebook, with a photo of Juned, suggesting he had been involved.

He informed the police about what happened but also picked out Juned again at a second video identification parade and described how the suspect was the one who asked him the time and he described how he had attacked him during the robbery.

Juned, of Higher Reedley Road, Burnley, has denied robbing Mr Conway and inflicting grievous bodily harm on him on March 28, 2013.

The trial continues.
