A post-match investigation was launched and officers have identified a number of people they would like to speak to in connection with the incident.

Five men from Burnley have already been arrested in connection with the incident on suspicion of conspiracy to commit violent disorder.

Detective Inspector Martin Melvin from Burnley CID said: “Thousands of Burnley and Southampton fans attended the match and the vast majority of fans were good spirited and well behaved.

“Unfortunately a small number of fans took it upon themselves to act violently towards others and cause disruption before the game. We cannot afford to let the actions of a minority spoil games like these for the true fans and to behave like this towards fellow football supporters is wholly unacceptable.

“I would urge anyone who recognises any of the six men pictured in the CCTV images to contact us.”

Anyone with information should contact Lancashire Police on 101 quoting log number 0765 of 13th December 2014.
