A SHOP which was burned down less than two years ago has now been hit by a flood.

Firefighters were called to the Spar — which reopened only a few months ago — on Padiham Road, Burnley, at 11.15pm on Monday after reports from a worker that water was gushing in.

When the crews arrived, there was around three inches of water on the tiled floor. The water spread to cover all of the ground floor.

Crew manager Lee Pickup said considerable damage had been caused.

He said: “Somebody happened to nip to the toilet and noticed there were two to three inches of water.

“The mains inlet where the water comes into the building had been damaged and came off. We could not get it back on and there was no way of isolating it. There was water flowing in for two hours and it was not just a small leak.

“It caused quite a lot of damage in the shop and it had not taken long for it to spread around the majority of the floor.”

The crews were at the scene for several hours before the water could be stopped.

Mr Pickup said: “It is a shame as it is only 12 months since the shop reopened after a fire.”

The blaze on January 6, 2013, severely damaged the shop, causing around £1 million worth of damage.

Arsonist Ben Young, 19, who had to be rescued from the roof, told police at the scene that others had made him do it.

Two staff members were inside cashing up when he struck.

Young, of Thorn Street, Duke Bar, Burnley, was jailed for four years and 12 weeks after admitting arson, being reckless as to whether life was endangered.
