Local councillors have called on Lancashire County Council to apologise for the delays.

Motorists have reported lengthy delays as temporary traffic lights cause queues back towards the M65 at junction 10.

Work had been scheduled to finish on Friday ((14 November)) but is now expected to be completed by this Friday ((21 November)), assuming there are enough dry periods to put down road markings, engineers at LCC, which is carrying out the improvements, said.

Coun Charlie Briggs, who represents the Gannow ward, said: "We have put up with roadworks for 19 weeks and it has been a nightmare.

"Realistically, another week won't really bother us, but I am aghast at how the county council has got it so wrong.

"It is absolutely diabolical that a town like Burnley should have a main road coming off the M65 with roadworks that have taken so long.

"The county council leader Jenny Mein should come to Burnley and apologise."

Graeme Leathard, principal engineer at the council, said with reasonable weather, the Mitre Street junction signals should also be in operation by November 26.

He said: "It is obviously deeply disappointing that completion of this work has been delayed and we are sorry for the disruption caused.

"We are currently awaiting an explanation for the delay from the contractor.

"This work has been part of a larger, highly-complex project that will improve this gateway into Burnley and mean fewer delays in future. I appreciate that this is frustrating and I am grateful for people's continued patience."
