AN appeal in memory of a brave nine-year-old has a new set of goals for the youngsters who have followed in her footsteps at a Burnley school.

Thousands of pounds have already been raised by the Georgia Fourie Butterfly Fund, to benefit the pupils of Holly Grove special school.

And now campaigning parents and staff are undertaking a fresh round of fundraising in tribute to Georgia, who died in March 2009 after a courageous struggle with cerebral palsy, quadriplegia, blindness, curvature of the spine and epilepsy.

Her parents Mel and Tim, from Dean Lane, Water, helped to launch the butterfly fund in memory of their ‘special little angel’ and teachers and fellow parents have taken up the challenge over the past five years.

In that time, a minibus and new outdoor playground equipment has been purchased, and supported respite holidays have been booked for next spring so that pupils and trained staff can enjoy time away.

Parent Patricia Meager said: “This year our focus for raising money has two targets. As we have grown so much and are currently expanding to meet the need for places, we are trying to raise money for a seven-seater vehicle.

“This will enable us to transport larger numbers of pupils as well as to assist parents on transporting to hospital appointments and taking pupils on sports ventures.

“We are also excited to start a 'Parent’s Fund' where we will be helping parents provide pupils with much-needed equipment and support in the home.”

Their next major event will be at the Burnley League club, in Richard Street, on Friday, October 24, from 7.30pm, featuring a buffet, prize quiz, raffle, auction, entertainment from vocalists Ross and Chelsea, and the Holly Grove Staff Dance.

Tickets cost £5 and can be obtained from the school, which is part of the Barden Lane campus, on the door or via Holly Grove’s ‘Golden Giving Page’ online.
