WORSHIPPERS at Burnley’s new Buddhist temple are preparing to put themselves at other people’s mercies as they bid to equip their new home.

Congregation members at the Buddha Land Kadampa Centre have arranged a ‘promise auction’ as a major fundraiser to support expansion plans.

And this could mean supporters undertaking anything from dog walking or car cleaning to baking or places on a Buddhism-inspired lifestyle course.

The event will be held on Saturday, October 11, starting at 6.30pm at the temple.

More than 200 people have registered with the centre in Curzon Street, which recently acquired new premises at the nearby Burnside Mill. Centre spokesman Rachel Waterworth said: “The Burnley centre is one of only a few meditation centres in the area so it attracts people from far and wide.”

The fledgling venture already hosts the ‘world peace cafe’, offering Fairtrade coffee and advice, and also runs a related information service and shop.

Town centre businesses and organisations are being urged to become involved with the auction, by sponsoring a prize.

Supporters are also on the look-out for paints, DIY materials, office and general furniture and catering equipment, as they kit out their larger home.

Rachel added: “Meditation has a large variety of health benefits and provides balance and a peaceful mind in our busy lives. Kadampa Land is providing a supportive community and helping local people find a way to cope with anxiety, depression and difficult times of life or even just the stress of daily life.”

The centre is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm and those interested in finding out more about the auction can contact Rachel on 07811 8521168.
