A ROW has broken out over the opening of a supermarket in Barrowford.

Morrisons’ smaller convenience store ‘M Local’ is set to open on the site of the former petrol station in Gisburn Road, Barrowford.

But there is confusion over the status of planning applications for the site, which has angered other local traders.

Both Pendle Council and Morrisons have acknowledged ‘planning issues’ to do with the site.

They are believed to revolve around the application for a store, which was originally made as four separate units, and also plans for a large sign outside the M Local, which was erected before planning permission had been granted.

Gerard Threadgould, who runs the Spar shop in the village, said: “We just think everybody should play by the same rules.

“Morrisons is supposed to open in September but there are still unanswered planning questions about the site.

“As a family business in the village we are happy to adapt our offering to compete, and we will be opening a smoothie bar next month.”

A Morrisons spokesperson said: “We are aware of concerns regarding the new M Local store in Barrowford and we are already working closely with the developer and Pendle Borough Council to resolve this situation as quickly as possible.”

Pendle Council confirmed that it is aware of a number of planning issues.

Philip Mousdale, deputy chief executive of Pendle Council, said: “We’re currently in discussions with all relevant parties to ensure that they’re resolved at the earliest opportunity.”
