CLARETS striker Danny Ings met a star of the future at a Rawtenstall school’s sports awards when swimmer Tom Hamer won the top prize.

Tom, 15, from Alder Grange Community Technology School, will represent Great Britain at the Commonwealth Games in October in the S14 category – for athletes with a learning disability.

Burnley ace Ings presented Tom, who broke the 200m Freestyle British record this year, with the Key Stage Four Sports Personality of Year award with Tom describing it as ‘fantastic’.

Sarah Crowder, who has represented the Calder Road school at netball, athletics, and cross country, and choreographed their third placed slot in the National Street Dance Championships, was awarded the Key Stage Three Sports Personality prize.

Football and athletics star Josh Field won the Leadership in Sport Award while all-rounder Isabel Wolsey, a Year Eight, won the Commitment to Sport Award.

Vanessa Holland, the school’s curriculum leader for PE, said: “It was great for them to have their night and also for them to meet Danny Ings.

“He was superb and stayed behind to sign autographs and pose for photographs.”
