A ROSSENDALE village could be cut off for almost three weeks because of roadworks, a councillor fears.
Resurfacing work on Burnley Road means that traffic will be unable to go south from Weir and Bacup.
Conservative Coun Jimmy Eaton said schoolchildren, churchgoers and shoppers would be left stranded due to bus services being diverted via Water and Waterfoot.
The road closure, southbound between Burnley Road’s junctions with Burnley Road East and Mill Street, is expected to last until July 25, Lancashire County Council (LCC) said.
Coun Eaton, whose Greensclough ward covers Weir and parts of Bacup, said bosses at Transdev Lancashire had failed to answer his queries about diversions affecting the number eight service between Burnley and Bacup town centre.
He said: “I’ve got parents and other constituents who haven’t got a clue what’s going on. For three days I’ve tried to get answers from the bus company but they’ve not got back to me.
“There are people who live in Weir who go to church in Bacup, and kids who go to school in Stacksteads and Waterfoot who are going to be affected by this.
“There is no information on the bus website and people are in the dark.
“There’s building work going on near Bacup Hub too down towards Laurel Street. They’ll probably end up closing the road off again for that down the line.”
Northbound traffic will be unaffected by the road closure, with a one-way system to be implemented.
An LCC spokesman said it was possible that the southbound closure could end earlier than July 25 if work progressed quickly enough.
Transdev Lancashire said: “The number eight service will be diverted via Burnley Road East through Water and Waterfoot before going to Bacup town centre.
“Unfortunately residents of Weir will have to go the long way round temporarily. We apologise for any inconvenience but the road closure is beyond our control.”
