TRADERS in a ‘forgotten’ Burnley street are hoping to put themselves back on the map with a new information point for visitors.

Businesses in Standish Street have teamed up to erect new signage in the town centre to direct shoppers to their hub of independent stores.

Marie Lord, who runs Quality Stitchers, said she hoped the landmark would be installed before August to help boost footfall.

Burnley Council is mulling over a planning application which would see the 1.4-metre steel sign placed on the footpath between the Wilkinson’s store and the short-stay car park in Curzon Street.

As well as directions to Standish Street, the signs will feature advertisements and offers from traders.

Ms Lord, who has been based there for nine years, said: “Hopefully it will point people in the right direction.

“There are a surprising number of people who don’t even know that Standish Street is there so we’re trying to build up its reputation.

“We’ve got some funds together in order to cover the costs and hopefully it will be up and running within a few weeks.”

Businesses hope to take advantage of the economic boost predicted by some due to Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League and the announcement of further student accomodation in the town centre.

Ms Lord added: “We’re trying to get everyone involved.

“We’ve got a meeting soon to plan for a family fun day in August.

“Everything in Standish Street is independent, from card shops to cobblers and jewellers.

“We think we offer something unique that you won’t find in Charter Walk or big department stores.”
