JUNIOR gardeners in Barnoldswick are joining members of the town’s In Bloom group to mark the organisation’s 2013 regional success.

Barnoldswick in Bloom’s schools project won the category for Best Feature in a Public Place at the movement’s north-west awards. Primary school pupils in Barnoldswick grew edible plants in pallet-sized planters, which were then displayed in the Town Square throughout the summer.

Coun Marjorie Adams, chairman of Barnoldswick In Bloom group, said: “Former winners of the trophy include major cities and holiday resorts, so Barnoldswick is in very good company. We are very proud of the contribution from our schoolchildren.”

And this year another project with schools is asking youngsters to imagine that they are living during the First World War and having to grow their own food, with the challenge of preparing meals with the produce following wartime recipes.
