A SENIOR councillor has vowed to fight plans to close Brierfield Town Hall to community groups as part of a public halls review.

The Colne Road landmark is set to shut, along with Trawden Community Centre, as part of proposals to ensure Pendle Council receives a £1million government efficiency support grant.

Barnoldswick Civic Hall may be rescued through a deal with town councillors, with the same true for Primet Hill Community Centre in Colne.

Other venues in Nelson and Colne have been leased to a third party and a late bid has even been made to take over Brierfield Community Centre.

But Brierfield Town Hall and the Trawden centre could close at the end of June.

Coun Mohammed Iqbal, Brierfield’s county councillor and borough Labour leader, said: “It's disgusting that the Tory party has abandoned Brierfield and Reedley residents. I will work with Labour councillors to look at ways at keeping it open."
