WORK on the latest phase of the transformation of the Weavers’ Triangle in Burnley is set to begin in early March, it has been announced.

Artwork for the new ‘corten’ bridge, linking the Visions Learning Trust university technical college with Sandygate Square has also been unveiled as part of the On The Banks initiative, the borough council’s partnership with Barnfield Construction.

Around £3.3million is being spent on the public works, with the backing of Lancashire County Council, which should provide the centrepiece for the future redevelopment of the former cotton heartland.

Eventually it is hoped that Sandygate Square will be surrounded by a cafe and shops, with a music arena as a near neighbour. Council leader Coun Julie Cooper said: “Our ambition to create welcoming gateways into Burnley is becoming a reality.”

County councillor John Fillis, county council highways cabinet member, added: “We are committed to improving the competitiveness of Lancashire’s towns and cities and have been working closely with Burnley to deliver projects that will bring considerable economic benefits to the town, helping to attract new business and jobs, as well as improving the look of the area overall.”

Gareth Smith, the scheme’s project director for Barnfield, said: “The infrastructure in and around the On the Banks development is of paramount importance and whilst delivering key assets is of primary importance we cannot forget the role that good public realm and infrastructure has to play.”

Wider pavements will be created to provide improved link-ups with both the town centre and the soon-to-be-reopened Burnley Manchester Road station.

The project should be completed by this September although traffic diversion may be put in place during part of the works.

Plans for the square include a large amphitheatre for outdoor events along with canalside terrace seating and landscaped areas.
