A SCHOOLGIRL was inspired by the singer Jessie J to lose her shoulder-length locks in aid of a cancer charity.

Macy Croucher, 12, who attends Alder Grange, has lost two grandparents to cancer in the past 12 months.

And her younger brother Alfie, nine, had a cancer scare, causing her to consider fundraising for Cancer Research.

Alfie has two rare genetic conditions, one affect-ing the left side of his body, and another Russell Silver Syndrome, which restricts his appetite and growth, Macy, of Kirk View, Waterfoot, said: “We thought at one point that Alfie could have cancer but, thank-fully, he hasn’t.

“I just realised that cancer can touch a lot of people, and I wanted to do something as I lost both my grandparents, on my dad’s side, last February within a week of each other and it really upset me.

“Me and my mum had talked about a sky dive but then, in September, singer Jessie J shaved her hair off and I thought, if she had the guts to do it, then I could do that.

“I was worried at first, but then I was determ- ined.”

She has collected £1,000 for the charity after visit-ing Beverley Alexander Hairdressers to get the drastic cut. Macy added: “I had shoulder-length hair, but I felt fine having it cut.

“The hair is going to the Little Princess Trust to make wigs for cancer suff-erers.”

Macy’s head of school, Joanna Griffiths, said: “We are really proud of Macy.

“She’s been very brave, especially in this cold weath- er, and it’s a fantastic am-ount of money to have raised.”
