A BURNLEY-based community group has won £500 in funding as part of the Skipton Building Society’s ‘Big 160’ event.

Galloping Grannies is a unique community group that runs a horse riding group with a difference — all its members are over 50 years of age.

The group’s voluntary instructors provide riding lessons for the over 50s, which ensures older people in the area can remain fit and healthy, and can take up a sport when they may have otherwise considered themselves too old to do so.

The funding received from Skipton’s Grassroots Giving Campaign will be hugely beneficial to the group, as it means the members of this unique group can continue to enjoy horse riding, benefiting their health and developing friendships.

One volunteer said: “Our main objective is the health and wellbeing of older people in the Lancashire area.

“We’re over the moon with this funding, as now we can be sure to carry on offering our unique service, which we know is loved my so many in the community.”
