‘Rat-run’ victory for concerned Pendle residents

CAMPAIGNERS who have been fighting for safety measures to be introduced on a notorious Colne ‘rat-run’ are celebrating victory.

Residents in the Birtwistle Avenue and Harrison Drive areas had faced years of traffic misery as motorists used the streets as a short-cut to the busy North Valley Road.

In July last year, pensioner Eric Judson suffered serious injuries when he was hit by a van while getting a shopping bag from his car.

Pendle county councillor Azhar Ali took up the residents’ fight at county hall and a £60,000 traffic calming scheme for the area has now been secured.

The scheme will see the introduction of a number of calming measures including new vehicle activated speed signage and speed bumps.

Elaine Wells, of Birtwistle Avenue, who launched the campaign with neighbour Angela Mitchell, said: “This is just brilliant news for the estate.

“We have been trying for years to get the councils to listen to us, without success.

“This will make a massive difference to the people on the estate.

“I would like to thank everyone who has helped at Lancashire County Council to get this money for our estate in Colne, especially County Coun Azhar Ali for delivering on the promise he made."

County Coun Ali said: “The North Valley estate is a rat-run for people trying to avoid the gridlock on North Valley Road and this has meant local residents, especially kids and the elderly, being forced to put their lives at risk when crossing the road.”

Coun Ian Tweedie, who represents the local area on Pendle Council, said: “I am delighted that Lancashire County Council have designed a comprehensive scheme which is going to cost around £60,000 to put in a traffic calming scheme all the way up Harrison Drive and Birtwistle Avenue as phase one of reducing speeds and accidents.”

Another large dollop of taxpayers cash to inconvenience and cause discomfort to everybody instead of just the twits that can't be careful, as well as not just the initial expense but the additional maintenance costs these schemes invariably incur as the traffic calming measures such as speed humps collapse, width restrictions forcing all traffic to use the same two strips of tarmac and causing road rage incidents (the opposite of traffic calming), additional pollution meaning fumes and noise caused by vehicles slowing and accelerating - when are we going to see proper enforcement of the 20mph limits already put in place in many residential areas - effectively self-funding because of the fines revenue? Drivers (and I am one) will learn quickly !

hopefully the road humps will deter drivers from using the road as a short-cut. Road narrowings / chicane along birtwistle have been in place for years but that didn't seem to make any difference?
.
its not just the 'speed' its the volume of traffic so speed signs are useless (you know the ones, smiley face if below the alloted speed limit).
the Numpties who decided to relocate boundary mills slap band in the middle of the M65 causing the bottle-neck on north valley road/vivary wayand preventing continuous motorway access into Yorkshire are to blame.
.
the intro of the traffic light system at the pub roundabout simply increased traffic along the rat-run. it does seem to help break traffic flow though (but impatient drivers hate lights so likely head up birtwistle after waiting) .
A ring-road is now desperately needed to alleviate the problem on vivary way so perhaps councillors could concentrate on that also. phase 2 !

For god sake just sort out the North Valley Road, put roundabout instead of traffic lights and get the traffic moving. Then there would be no need to worry about Rat-Runs

I like your style, robertsonwelsh - if the traffic lights aren't working there's no jams ! There are sooo many places that should have been roundabouts like the big lights by Prestige, the junction at the bottom of Rossendale road where it meets Todmorden road in a weird "X" junction, the junction between Ormerod Road and Eastern Avenue by the new fire station - seems LCC Highways are scared of them and given some of the useless drivers that don't know how to use them and can't be bothered with indicators I sort of don't blame them....but we are back to enforcement again !!
