Antiques Roadshow star praises Burnley's Towneley Hall
A TOP broadcaster has sung the praises of Burnley's iconic Towneley Hall just days after the town landed the prestigious enterprise award from the government.
In her column in a national newspaper yesterday on Britain's unsung attractions, broadcaster Fiona Bruce, who hosted an episode of Antiques Roadshow from the park in June, said Towneley was ‘beautifully manicured’ set amidst glorious parkland.
One woman who agrees with that assessment is Burnley councillor Cosima Towneley, a descendant of the family that called Towneley Hall home for more than 500 years.
She said: “It is a unique spot.
“We just don’t have any other homes of that size in this area.
“It’s one of Burnley’s green lungs. It was a brave move for what was then Burnley Corporation to take over the land in 1902.
“They saved it from going to waste. Really they were pioneers.
“For my family, the park has always been part of our collective conciousness. I learned to ride a bike there, I sometimes have a market stall there. It’s great.”
And staff at Towneley Park have shown no little initiative themselves as the venue has developed into a bona fide resort, complete with golf courses, art gallery and farmers’ markets.
Managed by Burnley Council, the 440 acre park was visited by 53,400 people last year, making it the most popular green space in the borough.
Sarah Cunliffe, who works at the museum shop in Towneley Hall, said the park was Burnley’s ‘flagship’ attraction. She said: “Obviously we have a lot of local interest, but people come here from not only the surrounding counties, but Australia, America, France, Germany and across the world.
“We have great facilities for weddings, business conferences, a fantastic art collection and great golf courses. It’s right on the doorstep of the town centre yet it’s the great outdoors. It’s a brilliant place for familes and everyone is made really welcome.”
