'Sexual predator' from Earby jailed for nine years
A 'SEXUAL predator' who groomed and abused two children has been locked up for a total of nine years.
Darren Calvert, now 37, kissed the two victims, touched them indecently and committed sex acts, after he was said to have given in to his perverted urges.
He had shown one of the children a pornographic film, which featured distressing rape scenes, Burnley Crown Court was told.
Calvert, who struck between 1999 and this year, was arrested after he went to the police and confessed.
The defendant, of Wentcliffe Drive, Earby, admitted a total of 13 allegations.
He pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent assault and one of indecency with a child and admitted nine charges, including engaging in sexual activity with a child, causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and causing a child to watch a sexual act, against the second victim. He had no previous convictions. Calvert was given an indefinite sexual offences prevention order and was also ordered to sign the sexual offences register for life.
Sarah Statham, prosecuting, said the first victim had tried to put the abuse behind them and block it out. The victim told police they now felt better, knowing the defendant could not do it to anybody else. The other victim had been left distressed by their ordeal. The victim had not told anybody what was happening, even though they had been upset. The prosecutor added: Calvert, said Miss Statham, was interviewed by the police several times over two days and said he had ‘caved in to certain urges’.
Richard Taylor, for Calvert, who had been on remand since his arrest, said he acknowledged he would receive a lengthy custodial sentence.
The solicitor said: “He is anxious that he receives treatment. He has accepted not only his responsibility, but his very deep-seated problems.
“His long-term aim is a very simple one and that is to attempt to be cured for the illegal and unlawful desires that he has had and he has carried out."
