Summer of love to descend on Rossendale as part of 'Whit-stock' celebrations
PEACE and love are set to descend on a Rossendale town – for one night only.
Inspired by the hippies of 69, the first-ever 'Whit-stock’ festival is set to hit the valley this autumn.
And while an October night in Whitworth may not automatically evoke memories of the Summer of Love, town mayor Karen Ruane is hopeful that The Riverside gathering will be infused with good vibes.
Coun Ruane said: “We are putting a lot of work into making The Riverside really come alive to the sounds of the 60s for the evening and I’m really looking forward to it.
“All monies raised on the evening will benefit organisations and groups working for the good of the Whitworth community.
“And I’m hopeful that we can raise a fair amount of money.
“It should be a really good, fun, daft evening and I’d love as many people as possible to find their inner hippie and come and join us.”
Groovy tunes are being lined up by the venue’s DJ and the Kopycat Kinks, as headliners, will attempt to ensure ‘it’s all too beautiful’ for music lovers.
Coun Ruane and her consort, husband Peter, are also putting on a buffet featuring some classic 60s treats and some ‘cosmic’ raffle prizes.
Tickets for the October 12 gig, which starts at 7pm, are priced £15.
They can be obtained from Coun Ruane on 07772 534412, the Riverside on 01706 854130, Coun Maureen Jones, on 07794 356610, or Margaret Miller or Janet Neal locally.
