Former Rossendale shoe firm boss is found hanged
THE brother of a popular businessman, who was found dead at home two days after his 50th birthday, has paid tribute to him.
Mark Duerden — whose full name was Antony Mark Duerden — was found hanged.
His family said he seemed fine after recently celebrating his birthday with his wife Mandy and seven-year-old daughter Poppy May, his younger brother Chris and their parents.
Chris, who was also his business partner, said: “It’s a huge shock for everyone. We are all in absolute bits. Mark had 200 people working for him at the slipper factory. He’s very well known. He has looked after me as my big brother and I’ve never been without him for more than two weeks.”
Chris and Mark started a landscape gardening business together after Mark used to run the slipper factory, Studio Footwear in Stacksteads, which closed 15 years ago.
Chris said: “He was very enthusiastic about a lot of things, including home brewing, cooking and inventing things. He could turn his hand to anything and loved to paint and do portraits. He was keen on music and was constantly telling me to listen to this and that.”
Chris said Mark, who attended Fearns High School and Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School sixth form, did not seem unhappy.
An inquest was opened and adjourned last Thursday. The coroner said there were no suspicious circumstances.
