Father with child knocked to the ground in Rawtenstall
3:51pm Wednesday 14th August 2013 in News
A MAN who was carrying a small child in his arms was punched in the face and knocked to the floor by a dog walker in a park in Rawtenstall.
Police said the 41-year-old was concerned for his child when a number of dogs, which were not on leads, approached himself and the child.
He spoke to the 49-year-old dog owner about the situation, and the pair began arguing. The victim was then assaulted, causing him to fall to the ground while still carrying the youngster.
An off-duty officer from Greater Manchester Police walking in the park was told of the assault and arrested a man.
Rossendale police questioned the man and then released him on bail. Officers are waiting for a medical statement from the doctor who examined the victim about the extent of his injuries.
Inspector John Fryer, of Rossendale Police, said: “It was a nasty assault. It’s cowardly to attack someone who has no chance to defend himself and terrible to hit someone with a child in his arms.”
Anyone with information should call police on 101.
