Fourth arrest in Rossendale robbery probe
4:52pm Friday 9th August 2013 in News
A FOURTH man has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery of an estate agents which prompted armed police to carryout two operations in Rossendale.
The suspect, a 24-year-old man, was arrested in Bury at just before 7pm on Wednesday and has been released on bail following the robbery of the Pearson Ferrier branch.
Three other men were arrested earlier in the week and released on bail.
On Tuesday, armed officers sealed off Burnley Road, between Rawtenstall and Crawshawbooth, after reports that one of the suspects had been spotted in the area.
Witnesses said around nine police vehicles were positioned along the road and a police helicopter hovered overhead.
They were called after a tip-off that the suspect had been seen driving a dark-coloured BMW.
Last wed armed police also surrounded a house in Ramsbottom as they searched for two robbers who targeted the estate agents, in Walmersley Road, Bury, at 4.35pm earlier the same day. The men burst into the office and forced one member of staff into the back room area, while other staff members were held in another area inside the building. One of the men was brandishing what appeared to be either a spanner or wrench, while the other had a silver handgun.
The robber with the gun struck a male worker in the face with either the weapon or his fist, causing facial injuries.
The two offenders stole cash, believed to be a four-figure sum, and fled in a green Mazda car, which was later found abandoned.
Det Sgt Ian Partington said: “I would like to appeal to anyone who either saw these men going in or out of the estate agents, or who has information about the movements of the green Mazda before and after this violent robbery.”
Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
