A NEW community group aimed at protecting green belt land in the south of Rawtenstall will meet for the first time today.

The Residents and Friends of Townsend Fold group has already collected more than 500 signatures of opposition to possible housing developments on land north and south of Duckworth Lane.

Its first meeting will be held at Townsend Fold Social Club, off Lower Clowes Road, from 7pm.

Under proposed changes to Rossendale Council’s green belt and urban Boundaries, the land at Haslam Farm, between Bury Road and the East Lancashire Railway could be redefined.

Peel Property and Holdings has already identified the possibility of building 155 new homes on the land.

A spokesman for Residents and Friends of Townsend Fold said: “We have support from Rossendale Civic Trust.

“The people of Townsend Fold want to come together and show a united front against the redesignation of our green belt land.”
