Desperate Burnley dad stole medicine for sick baby

A desperate dad who stole medication for his sick baby was found to have amphetamine on him, a court heard.

Burnley magistrates were told how Daniel Allonby, 24, was on benefits and was short of cash when he stole Calpol and cosmetics, worth £12.97, from Morrisons at Nelson, on February 27. He was caught by a security guard who stopped him at the scene.

Allonby, of Woodbine Road, Burnley, admitted theft from a shop and possessing amphetamine. He was given a 12 month conditional discharge and must pay £75 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Daniel Frazer, for Allonby, said he had been in a car accident, couldn’t work and was on benefits. He was trying to provide for his family and leave his past behind him.

The solicitor said: “His 10-month-old child was ill and needed medication. He didn’t have any money and acted out of desperation.”
