Burnley landmarks to be turned blue to put spotlight on autism

LANDMARKS in Burnley are to emulate iconic buildings and be illuminated in blue to shine the spotlight on autism.

Burnley Town Hall’s clock tower, the viaduct and other town centre buildings will be bathed in a blue glow on Tuesday, April 2 as part of Autism Speak’s Light It Up Blue campaign.

The idea came from 39-year-old campaigner Scott Noddings who helps Action for ASD, Burnley’s autism support centre based on Queen Street.

Since the formation of Light It Up Blue iconic buildings, such as the Empire State Building, its New York neighbour Madison Square Garden, Sydney Opera House and Niagara Falls have been illuminated.

Scott, a DJ at Smackwater Jacks in Burnley, said: “I’ve had great support so far and several buildings will be lighting up to spread the awareness in this area in this very blue positive light.

“Several sites in Burnley are taking part and, after some persuading, I’ve just got permission from Blackpool Tower to do it there.

“I would also like to encourage other businesses in Burnley to go blue for the night.”

Scott’s own business Opus Pro Audio on Parker Lane will be illuminated and Burnley Markets will be turning the charity hut, outside McDonalds, blue as well.

April 2 is World Autism Day and Action for ASD, at Suite 7 Kings Mill, Queen Street will be having a drop in session at the centre from 10.30am to 3.30pm for anyone who is seeking help or advice on autism spectrum disorders.

The centre supports children and adults with ASD and has a soft play area, computer suite, internet cafe and tuck shop.

It also provides autism awareness training for mental health staff and professionals in East Lancashire.
