A NELSON business is counting the cost after vandals smashed all of its front windows causing £5,000 in damage.

United Carpets, in Leeds Road, Nelson, was targeted by yobs overnight on Tuesday.

Manager Stephen Brown branded the incident as ‘mindless’ and said it had left the shop out of pocket.

He said: “They have smashed the five big windows at the front of the store and it is going to be around £1,000 per window to fix.

“It is going to leave us out of pocket because the insurance doesn’t cover damage to the windows.

“This is run as my own business, United Carpets is franchise operated so it is leaving me out of pocket and causing us problems we don’t need.

“It is just mindless vandalism. It will be somebody who thinks they having a bit of a laugh but they don’t realise the problems they are causing for other people.

“When something like this happens it makes you question whether it is worth carrying on in the same location.

“We have to ask if it is worth staying in Nelson if this is going to happen again, we can’t afford to be repairing windows.

“We have tried to think if there is any reason for it, if there is anybody we have annoyed, but we can’t think of anything.”

Police are investigating the incident and Mr Brown said he had provided them with CCTV footage of the outside of the shop.

He said: “We’ve got CCTV which shows the area outside the shop and there is somebody on that at around 1.45am.

“We’ve handed the footage over to the police and I think they are looking at it and trying to identify the person involved.”
