Five-star rating for Haslingden school kitchen

A SCHOOL kitchen that caters for four times the amount of pupils it was designed for has earned a five-star hygiene rating from council inspectors.

The popularity of the canteen at Haslingden High School has outgrown its capacity, so the school holds three half-hour sittings across different age groups to accommodate pupils of different ages.

It holds just 400 people but about 1,600 use it every day.

Assessors from Rossendale Borough Council recently awarded it the highest hygiene marks possible.

Catering manager Iain Campbell said: “In light of current media issues regarding food standards, it is reassuring that our students have the confidence in our catering and this is reflected not only via our daily customer base but also in the hygiene rating.”

It’s the second time the school has achieved this.

Mr Campbell added: “Some of the team have worked in Haslingden High School’s catering department for more than 20 years. They have seen a lot of changes within the school and also in catering regulations.”
