Raider punched Whitworth shopkeeper

A SHOPKEEPER was punched by a robber who stole cash during a raid in Whitworth.

Police are hunting the thief who entered Healey Off-Licence store, in Market Street, and attacked the man before stealing around £200 from the till.

The 47-year-old victim, originally from Sri Lanka, was shaken after the incident, which took place at around 4.30pm on Friday, March 1.

He did not require hospital treatment, police said.

Inspector John Fryer, from Rossendale police, said: “The offender was a white male, clean-shaven, with short hair at the back and sides and longer fair hair on top.

“He was a slim-to-medium build, wearing a black shirt and dark trousers.”

He added: “We are studying CCTV footage and anyone with information should contact Lancashire police on 101.”

The same store was targeted by masked raiders in December 2010, when three offenders armed with an iron bar and a knife stolen cigarettes.
