Nelson quarry could last until 2018

A FRESH bid is being made to extend the working life of a Nelson quarry to cope with the effects of the recession.

Operations at Catlow Quarry have slowed as a result of the economic downturn, according to operators Green Natural Stone Products.

The demand for large building stone has diminished and the most regular demand at Catlow is for bespoke orders for steps, lintels, jambs and pavors.

Bosses have now approached the county council for permission to extend the life of the quarry beyond previous permissions, which expired in 2010.

Under a new application, the quarry could be worked until 2018, then restored with inert materials over the next two years.

The firm is also planning a small shed at the quarry to protect workers from the weather, after problems with retaining staff.

Most larger blocks quarried at Catlow weigh around 14 tonnes.
