Todmorden Agricultural show scrapped amid concerns over flooding at park

Lancashire Telegraph: NO SHOW Centre Vale Park NO SHOW Centre Vale Park

FLOODING problems at a town park have led to the cancellation of a popular agricultural show, it has been announced.

Supporters of Todmorden Agricultural Show have pulled the plug on their 2013 spectacular already, amid continuing concerns about the state of Centre Vale Park.

Fresh investigations have now been pledged by the Environment Agency following the failure of storm drains serving the Calderdale venue.

Society president Shirley Fielder said: “It is just like marshland at the moment. We’ve have taken the decision now because we had to start paying deposits on marquees and stands.”

“The water has not been getting through to the drains and it needs looking at seriously again before they take a decision on what can be done.”

Mrs Fielder and fellow organisers of the show, which attracts interest across East Lancashire and West Yorkshire, had looked at other sites in Cliviger, Todmorden and Hebden Bridge but none of the locations was considered large enough.

Society officials are due to agency and Calderdale Council officials again on January 28 for an update report.

And they will meet again in early February to decide whether they want to stage a smaller-scale event, to benefit the town, or turn their attentions to a 2014 return.

Environment Agency officials have said that they are investigating the Centre Vale problems as ‘a matter of urgency’. Promoters of Todmorden Carnival have pledged that they will hold the event in the park on May 25.
