Barnoldswick councillors set to object to high school plans

PENDLE councillors are set to object to plans for the redevelopment of West Craven High School.

Lancashire County Council announced plans for an £11million redevelopment of the site, in Kelbrook Road, Barnoldswick, in October.

The work would also see a new Barnoldswick Primary School built on the site, a move which has angered local councillors who say the move would mean the loss of playing fields and increase traffic of Kelbrook Road.

And councillors could be on another collision course with the county council over the work at the high school if they follow planning officers advice and object to the work.

Helen Garnett, Pendle Council planning officer, said: “The school was built in the mid 20th century and is characterised by its relatively formal appearance which essentially comprises a number of rectangular structures of varying sizes giving it the appearance of a collection of attached buildings.

“The two front extensions would introduce further aluminium features to the building and whilst in some cases the use of aluminium is appropriate where it forms an integral part of the design of the building, in this instance the structures are so small as to likely be lost against the scale of the existing building. This would detract from the appearance and character of the building.

“Whilst the new building to the south and internal structures are considered acceptable, the two smaller extensions to the front of the building do not represent good design and therefore it is recommended that the council objects to these.”

A decision on whether to object will be taken by West Craven councillors on January 8. A final decision on the redevelopment work will be taken by members of the county council.

thats ok us in west craven will have a lick of paint here and there for the high school that has needed an up grade a lot longer before the new schools needed building in colne/nelson but then again we really not part of pendle are we . thats until you want our council tax money.better off in the ribble valley.then we dont have nelsons MP stiffing west craven like he did after the elections when his promises went out the window soon as he was voted in on lies lies and more lies.

Must-you says...

West craven kids get nothing that school is going from strength to strength due to the hard work of the staff within who are working in old dilapidated classrooms with little technology and no mod cons compare that to the new burnley super schools sometimes you can't help but feel that the councillors for this area are against the school and no amount of hard work will ever change that for them. Give our kids a chance give them the facilities they deserve and find something else to object to there's much bigger issues here that u fail to notice :(

County Councillor Keith Bailey worked hard to get the funding for this new school building approved and I'm sure LCC will ignore Helen Garnett's comments (even if they can't understand a word of it!). Thankfully, LCC have the final decision not these unnamed Pendle Councillors. Let's get it built without delay!

is this the same keith bailey who knowingly used childrens images to further his career ..also keiths party who promised along with MP a sephenson said we will revamp west craven high etc and then after getting voted in .took all the funding that was on the table away like a thief in the night. yes thats him.where is all the road saefty for a new school etc. none.not in the right place either .its funny if barlick had 10 % of what nelson gets since the cons got in we would be doing very well....... notice the party's name CON .yep you got it. keith bailey is a joke

What funding are you talking about CW? There was none on the table for West Craven High until the Conservatives at LCC put it there. And 10% of what funding in Nelson are you talking about? Are you on medication?

he used pictures of children from schools in west craven with himself promoting himself without permission or consent of parents this was in the papers.the money was there to do up west craven before the last elections MP STEPHENSON said the money would not be taken away once he got voted in the money was taken away for many schools due upgrades and west craven was one of them.also barlick barley gets the money spent on it as nelson does.ie new high schools new junior schools grants for doing up houses etc.no im not on drugs but maybe who dishes the money out is.tell me what our fantastic MP has done for west craven please

As a past pupil and parent of children who have attended West Craven. We have been been waiting for years for the school to receive some sort of funding for improvements. It seems that when it comes to dishing out money for schools in the pendle area we are either classed as the poor relation or totally disregarded. When you go into the school you feel instantly welcome, the door is always open to anyone who would like to go and see what goes on there. There are a couple of areas which have seen some small improvements, and if you look into these you will find that most of the funding for these improvements has been raised by the combined efforts of the dedicated staff and parents on the school association. This school deserves the same consideration as all the other schools in the pendle area. Don't let the opinions of a few ruin the future of our children. When the arcitects held a meeting at barnoldswick library, people came in vast numbers to see the plans for the school; and were very pleased with what they saw. Did these people who are objecting now come and raise their objections then NO!!!!!!!
I say it's time our children were in a school where the heating worked properly, the roof didn't leak, the disabled could access all areas, the dining hall was a welcoming and pleasant place to eat a meal and socialise with friends. Is it too much to ask ?????

for barlick yes. i dont see our MP is even bothered about west craven .before he was voted in he told me the funding was there and would stay.he gets voted in and him and his party take it away with no fuss from pendle council.i left west craven in 1984 the school inside and out has hardly changed my mother who is 77 says only the top floor was the difference since she was there .so yet again its barlick and earby that gets stiffed by our MP and local councillors who dont seem to have the plums for a fight whith lcc.but then again if it wasnelson MP staphenson bends over backwards to accomadate the town as much as he can
