Rossendale parents angry over closure of nursery

PARENTS of dozens of Rossendale toddlers have been left in the dark after the closure of a nursery.

Dummies and Diapers, based in Goodshaw Avenue in Crawshawbooth, shut its doors before Christmas just a week after moving to a temporary location in Rawtenstall.

Some parents claim they paid hundreds of pounds for nursery sessions that had not taken place because of the sudden closure.

The nursery moved to the former Training 2000 building in Crankshaw Street on December 10 after a burst pipe at its Goodshaw Avenue home left it water damaged and not up to standard.

But parents who turned up at the gates on December 17 found them locked.

One Crawshawbooth mum, who did not want to be named, said she was shocked and had taken a big financial hit to enlist her two-year-old daughter in an alternative nursery.

She said: “We pay the childcare fees up front at the beginning of the month and I paid around £200 for the weeks that Dummies and Diapers was closed.

“It’s not ideal at Christmas time. I’m lucky because I’ve managed to find her a different nursery and I wasn’t working so I could look after her, but I’ve had to pay a deposit up front.

“I can’t imagine how parents who were working coped.

“We got a letter from the nursery on December 21 saying that it had ceased to trade due to unforeseen circumstances. Other than that there has been nothing.”

In March the nursery changed its name from Goodshaw Kindergarten and Private Nursery.

Ofsted, the education regulator, said that although they were aware that the nursery had closed, it was not as a result of any action taken by them.

Lancashire County Council said it was also aware of closure but that it had taken no action.

Nobody was available for comment at Dummies and Diapers’ registered address in Myrtle Street, Bolton, yesterday.

What utter rubbish if the "ski slope" nursery has a poor financial position, then they, like this one are unlikely to report the fact to their customers no matter how "brilliant" the staff are! Of course I could be wrong and its actually only a select few who have the insight to pick a "brilliant" nursery like you have, but I doubt it.

Why do people have kids then palm them off before they are of school age? I went without when my kids were little so I could watch them grow up. No car, no phone, no new clothes for me and their father or nights out. He worked in a factory and I brought them up. My girls have grown up well balanced young ladies with good jobs. They also are of the same sentiment. Have children, look after them yourself....

I wonder if you'd be quite so narrow minded if you found that while an 18 year old single mum was at home ''watching her child grow'' you were paying taxes for her benefits? Or whether you'd be pleased to see she had got off her butt to support herself and her child by working, a consequence of which means she has to put her child into nursery! Some people cannot afford to sit around watching children grown when they need feeding, clothing and housing! How very ignorant of you!

What's utter rubbish you stupid person,I was merely stating a fact,yes it is a brilliant nursery and yes the staff are very good,it doesn't mean it's going shut shop and leave parents in the lurch now does it,you sound like your one of the parents that's been affected by this other nursery closing down,but lets face it,anyone with a brain should have clicked on when they changed there name of the nursery,that alone would of told me they'd gone bust and set up in another new name,oops and didn't tell the parents they were in financial difficulty,and if you are one of the parents been affected by there actions it serves you right with an attitude like yours,god help your kids you nasty thing...

I really have to disagree with your point of view on "palming off " your children. I believe the right thing to do is expose your toddlers to social situations found in toddler groups where they can learn to interact and share. The next progression is then for them to go to pre-school/nursery where they can grown on their experiences and further their education from that already learnt from their responsible, caring parents. For children to thrive in school they need to have the skills and abilities gained from their experiences in early years settings.

My children have grown to be sociable, well rounded and intelligent individuals having had the experience of toddler groups and pre-school. I was a stay-at-home-mum so I saw them off to pre-school, was there to collect them and even had a part-time job to interact with grown-ups. I have always been available when my children needed me and now that they are heading towards university I can look at returning to full-time employment to suit me.

Palming your children off is having family and friends look after them while you go back to work to maintain the lifestyle you had before the arrival of children. Palming them off is leaving your children in the care of others while you go off having a good time.
