A STUDENT allegedly knocked a female teacher to the ground, and repeatedly punched her in the face, at a Burnley school.

The 15-year-old boy is alleged to have attacked the teacher during an English class at Sir John Thursby Community College, in Eastern Avenue, at around 1.30pm on Tuesday, November 6.

The 28-year-old teacher suffered a cut to her head, injuries to her teeth, and a swollen face, and needed hospital treatment.

A police spokesman confirmed a 15-year-old boy had been arrested over the incident. He has been charged with a section 47 assault and is due to appear before Burnley Youth Court later this month.

David Burton, headteacher at Sir John Thursby Community College, said that the student had been excluded following the incident.

He said: “I can confirm that a pupil has been excluded following an incident in school. However, as the matter is subject to police investigation, I am unable to comment further.”
