AN AMATEUR football club faces a major bill to get its electric back on after thieves stole a large stretch of cable.

It is the latest incident to befall Worsthorne FC this season. The club has been without water since before Christmas and also had a break-in in December.

Thieves stole 30ft of electric cable the club’s Bank Hall ground in Colne Road at the start of February.

Club bosses have been quoted £2,000 for repairs to get the power back on.

The club does not have insurance.

Michael Evans, club president, said: “It’s been a bit of an awkward season.

“We’ve had no water, but luckily we’ve not been playing since December as the pitches haven’t been good enough.

“But games are back on now so we need to get it sorted.

“We’ve had a £2,000 quote for the electric but we just don’t have that money. We’re a village football team.”

Thieves stole tools and copper piping after the break-in.

The water, which has been off since a section of pipe burst, is to be turned back on this weekend.

Mr Evans said: “We’ve been offered the use of a generator for some of the electric so we can play games, but it won’t be powerful enough for people the showers and things like that.

“We’re going to have to do something to try to raise the money.

“There is nothing on the cards at the moment but we will have to look at fundraising, we can’t go on paying this money out without getting some back in.”

Worsthorne FC, which plays in the East Lancashire League, has played its home games at Bank Hall for 15 years.
