THE NEW vicar in Cliviger and Worsthorne has spoken of the challenges ahead as he looks to start fundraising for vital work to his two churches.

The Rev Keith Henshall will be looking to raise funds for work at St John the Divine, Cliviger, and St John the Evangelist, Worsth-orne.

Both churches need work, with a new roof needed for St John Evangelist.

Mr Henshall, who has worked in Cyprus and the Shetland Isles, said: “Unfortunately both build-ings need a lot of work on them, so there is going to be a lot of fundraising ahead to make sure they remain as a focal point for the community.

“The work has got be done so we will have to try and raise as much as we can to get it completed as soon as possible, they are both fantastic buildings.”

A committee is being set up to organise fundraising for the new roof, after the specification for the work was agreed by the diocesan advisory committee.

The work has now gone out to tender to six companies.

Mr Henshall, who has taken over from the Rev Lawrence Laycock, said he has been able to combine his love of travel and passion for the church to spend time in different roles.

But after arriving in the area in January he has had to wait two months for his institution, because of the snow.

“I’ve seen more snow in Burnley in three months than in three years in the Shetlands,” he said.

“I have always liked travelling and being a single man there has been nothing to tie me down, so I have been able to take in these experiences.”

Mr Henshall is vicar at St John the Divine in Cliviger and St John Evangelist in Worsthorne.

He said: “The biggest challenge here is combining my role in the two churches, both are very lively but also very different.

“One is a church at the heart of the village and the other is very much a church school, so they present their own challenges.

Mr Henshall spent time in Ribbleton, Preston, and Lancaster in the early 1990s before becoming a chaplain in Paphos, Cyprus, and then swapping the heat for the Hebrides by moving to the Shetland Isles.
