CHICKENS have come home to roost in Worsthorne – in their very own caravans.
Danny Myers said he was inspired to store his poultry in the innovative way after watching an episode of BBC2’s Jimmy’s Farm.
The 47-year-old wants to put around 100 chickens, which are currently in his field, in 10 caravans at his home in Brownside Road.
He hopes they will produce around 700 dozen eggs every week.
The first will be moving in shortly.
Mr Myers said council planners had denied him permission to put holiday log cabins in his field after objections from neighbours.
Instead he has been given the go-ahead to put caravans in his field which will be used to accommodate his chickens.
Mr Myers said: “The first caravan is down in my field now, but it needs stripping out first.
“Then we will put the first lot in there and they will begin laying their eggs.
“We have been told to diversify and that is what we are doing.”
Mr Myers’ plans have previously angered residents, who signed a 900-signature petition last year protesting against proposed development at his farm.
However, despite this, he insists his unconventional plan will prove a success.
He added: “They will adapt straight away to the caravans.
“Chickens will roost anywhere – as long as they have got a perch they are happy.
“I am not sure it is that unusual. I got the idea from Jimmy’s Farm and I was told there’s nothing in planning law to stop me from putting my chickens in a caravan.
"They will love it in there.”
