Burnley farmer to keep chickens in caravans

A FARMER denied permission to build holiday homes in his field will instead use caravans to house chickens.

Danny Myers, owner of Brownside Farm, in Brownside Road, Burnley, was last year refused permission to build nine log cabins after a 900-signature petition from residents.

Now, after approval from Burnley Council planners, he is instead using his farm for mobile caravans for his chickens to protect them at night from foxes, badgers and other predators.

Nearby residents, whose houses overlook Mr Myers’ field, branded the move “bizarre” and said it would “spoil the nature” of the site.

However, the defiant farmer said he has been forced into diversification for financial reasons and the caravans would enable him to sell free-range eggs.

He said: “It is daft that they want to control what I do on my land – this is a working farm.

“All I am trying to do is make a living. They will not allow me to put buildings on there so the only way I can get round it is to get mobile caravans on there.

“I need these to protect my chickens because when I first moved to Brownside Farm six years ago I had 1,000 chickens.

“Now I have only got 120 chickens because they get killed by foxes and badgers.”

Mr Myers currently has three caravans on his field but plans more in future.

And he claims to have the support of “90 per cent” of nearby residents despite a 900-signature petition last year protesting against proposed development at his farm.

Yesterday, a resident who has lived near the farm for 30 years said: “Keeping caravans there ruins the nature of the site because it is greenbelt land.”

Another resident, who lives in nearby Lindsay Park, added: “The proposals sound bizarre.

"I don’t want them but I know people who feel worse about it than me.”

The neighbours who complained about the log cabins will be happy now. Just as many were in favour of them, including myself. Another lost opportunity for Burnley through a few outspoken NIMBYS. The farmer needs to support his family so let him get on with it. At least we'll be able to buy genuine free range eggs!

To add to my previous comment, Brownside Farm has always been a working farm and is not green belt land but a greenfield site on which caravans are acceptable! Yes, I am furious with the 'complainers' and yes I did want to move into a log cabin! Perhaps the chickens will make better neighbours!

I feel incensed that, yet again, the narrow-minded, seemingly jealous set of individuals, who camapaigned against the proposed log cabin scheme, are revving up to another round of wingeing. The land owners have an inherent right( and actually a legal one) to use the land for agricultural purposes. In direct contrast, the homeowners on the fringes of the land have no right to a view, or to a say as to how a man makes his money. As many people are aware, the log cabins would have been of particular benefit to Burnley ( let's face it after-all, there is more than enough social and cultural deprivation in this town), and having seen the scheme myself, considered it tasteful and in perfect cohesion with the site.

The proposed usage now may not be as pleasing to the eye, but has a greater benefit, in that free range, organic farming ( eggs in this case) is the way forward and I welcome the opportunity to purchase quality produce, on my own doorstep.
When delving into other peoples lives and livelihoods, the miserable, negative, jealous bunch of local residents, many of whom appear to be engaging in some form of personal vendetta, should have probes a little deeper into the viable alternatives. The farmer in question has a right to explore different avenues to make a living, and again, I applaud his ingenuity and versatility in these difficult financial times. Well done.
