BURNLEY revellers could be served drinks until 6am if a town centre bar is granted an extension to its late licence.

Barcode, Hammerton Street, is applying for a licence for entertainment, music and drinks until dawn seven days a week.

If the new hours are approved it will mean Barcode is open later than nearby clubs such as Lava Ignite, which serves until 4am.

Currently Barcode rings last orders at 4am and the business closes at 4.30am at the latest.

The proposed hours will mean the premises can serve booze until 6am and will need to clear by 6.30am.

A Burnley Council spokesman said: “We anticipate receiving a formal application for a varying the licence in the next day or two.”

A former Blockbuster store has been granted planning permission to be turned into a bar with a 3am licence.

Building owner Dennis Berry plans to convert the ground floor of St James Court, St James Row, early next year, with a terrace area constructed as part of the proposals.

Mr Berry said: “There’s still a few legal hoops to jump through but I’m glad we’ve now got planning permission.

“I’ve been hearing rumours going around town that the place will open before Christmas but they’re not true.

“There aren’t even any drains in at the moment but we’re hoping to start work early next year.

“We intend it to be a comfortable modern bar which will add to a night out in the town.”

The former Orange House in Hammerton Street, most recently known as Subculture is also expected to re-open soon under a different guise.
