Voters go to the polls in Burnley by-election today
11:30am Thursday 10th March 2011 in Rosegrove
By Peter Magill, Chief reporter
STEPPED DOWN Julie Johnson
ROSEGROVE and Lowerhouse residents are going to the polls today to choose their new representative on Burnley Borough Council.
Kate Mottershead (Lib Dem), Bea Foster (Lab), Paul McDevitt (BNP), Matthew Isherwood (Con) and Andrew Hennessey (Ind) are all contesting by-election.
The Liberal Democrats are defending a 57-vote majority in the by-election prompted by the resignation of Julie Johnson last month.
Currently there are 21 Lib Dem councillors, 14 Labour, five Conservative, two BNP and one Independent, along with three empty seats.
The two other empty seats, following the disqualification of Labour’s Imtiaz Hussain in Burnley Wood and the death of the Liberal Democrats’ Frank Ashworth in Rosehill, will be contested in May.

The LibDems may be a shambles but there is no limit to the public's stupidity.

.
Any chance of answering my question on the other thread?
.
You know the one.
It's where I asked if you would have signed the Lib Dem petition in The Times regarding the cuts?
.
It a perfectly reasonable question.
Given that you said the first you heard of the petition was when it appeared in print.
.
You also accused me of being quick to pass judgement and this is why I'm asking you again.

Sorry, didn't see it. Don't always have time to follow up on all threads.
Yes, I would have signed it.

The powerful influence of the Orange Book Brigade are one of the reasons why I will no longer consider voting Lib Dem in local elections.
.
Also, I wouldn't even dream of voting Lib Dem at a GE while Gordon Birtwistle is the MP.
He's even backed the disastrous plans for our NHS at PMQs in what was a characteristic display of sycophancy.
He's the same on Tuition Fees, Forest sell off etc.
.
I'd rather hoped he would have been a dissenting voice to some of the more Right Wing coalitions plans.
At least a few of the more principled Lib Dems MPs are willing to put their heads above the parapet, but not him because he's only in this for the short term and he knows he has no chance of being re-elected.
.
FWIW; Birtwistle, Clegg, and Gideon's pet rodent at The Treasury, may as well go the whole hog and join the Conservative Party!

There are many ideological differences that the press quotes, TV coverage and even Parliamentary debates don't demonstrate. For example, all three of them believe that higher education should be funded out of direct taxation and that tuition fees should be abolished. This is not apparent from some of the things they have said - had to say - in order to maintain the coalition.
The party as a whole is firmly wedded to such principles yet in order to discharge "collective responsibility", members of the Government, even those at the lowly level of PPS like Gordon, are required to express support for cabinet decisions. Whilst I might insist that those three MPs hold this particular view, you're unlikely to hear it from them any time soon, which makes it understandably hard to believe.
So, why appear to compromise one's integrity in this way? Why not just be honest about where one stands? Well, the alternative is that the Tories are left to run the country on their own. Then you really would see some proper right wing stuff going on because there would be nothing holding back the Tory right. That's why Clegg, Alexander and Birtwistle do it: in order to have influence and to try to keep things moderate.

Fair enough, you got a commitment for an AV referendum, but your party is now as popular as a dose of pox and there's only way the AV vote will go.
Even the No Vote campaign are using Clegg to front it.
.
It will be a couple of decades or more before there is another chance to change the FPTP system and you only have yourselves to blame because you could have got the AV referendum commitment from the Tories without jumping into bed with them.
All you needed to do was to pledge your support to a Tory minority govt in much the same way as the Lib-Lab pact.
This kept the Liberals Party distinctly separate from the Labour govt.

It,s time the voter,s woke up to the BNP & relised that they have got the right idea to get this country back the bull-dog spirit.

Yes, Labour have always been good at spending other peoples money on buying votes. When they couldn't borrow money they got involved in the PFI ripoff and mortgaged our children's future, now the Tories have to try to get us out of the mess that Labour left us in.

This result is hard on all of us locally.
We've just won an extra £1.4m a year for Burnley after complaining bitterly to the Government about our grant cuts.
We've got some big economic regeneration projects on the go at the Burnley Bridge site and the research park near the college and university campus.
We know that Burnley people want anti-social behaviour under control so we protected the PCSO budget from national cuts.
But in the end, none of this was enough. We need to get across our message on the things we've done in Burnley, for Burnley. We learned a hard lesson last night and the local party has some serious thinking to do.
I agree with him. Serious question: why do you think the local councillors, who seem to be doing a good job, have suffered at the hands of voters?

Thats like saying all LibDems and Labour are Peados because so many have been convicted of it.
As for not caring where you are from you are a disgrace and you are not a good father because you deny your children a sense of identity.
Maybe you would like all children taken at birth and put into a big pool and shared out so no child has a real family.
