Prince braves weather for canal trip

THE Prince took a trip down Burnley's canal to see the full potential of the Weavers Triangle development.

His Royal Highness, wrapped up in a camel overcoat, braved the windy climb up to the Leeds-Liverpool from Centenary Way to get a panoramic view of the town.

He then boarded the Marton Explorer barge to take a 40 minute trip along the water to Sandygate.

The trip had almost been cancelled at the last minute due to poor weather conditions.

A second boat had had to be used to break through the ice on the canal so that the barge could travel over from Foulridge.

The poor weather had also led to a low turn-out with only two members of the public coming to see the Prince off.

Damien Hirst and his daughter Rachel, six, were there to greet the Prince.

Damien said: "I saw the Prince open Queen Street Mill when I was at College, but that was when I was 17.

"Rachel is excited about seeing him because she loves princes and princesses. I hope she is not disappointed."

"I think it will be good to see Charles because he is the future king."

And you wonder why Burnley is neglected nationally, if this is the reception you give to visitors? Shame on the other posters here.

Sometimes I wonder whether it's worth all the bother of being a councillor. We've gone to all this effort to bring the Prince's money to Burnley, to get him to bring his charities like the Prince's Trust, to bring wealthy businessmen like Philip Green, and to convince him that Burnley should be his number one priority in the whole of the UK. He's spent a whole day here looking at the problems and opportunities. This is virtually unprecedented for the Prince. And what do people have to say?

Whatever you think about the way the monarchy is funded - with our taxes - do remember that he has the power to TRANSFORM this town.

Get behind the project, will you, or do you want Burnley to deteriorate into a slum? Burnley is your home and my home, and this Lib Dem council is going to pull whatever levers it has to to get this place out of the mess Labour have left it in for thirty years and to make Burnley one of the best place to live in the country!

That's a joke, the ice had gone from the canal by 9 am this morning. Still it did give them a good excuse for not passing through Daneshouse and seeing all the rubbish and debris provided by the locals.

It didn't take to long Darren to start to look on being a councillor as a 'bother'. Clearly I was wrong when I thought that LibDems were the answer, perhaps I should give my loyalty back to Labour. At least they are consistent.

Sorry Darren the Monarchy is an outdated and expensive institution that should of been abolished years ago personal opinion though.

I agree Burnley does have problems yes but bringing a man who lost the respect of a lot of people years ago to his extra marital affairs is not the answer to Burnley's or any town's answers.

I would personally prefare a Democratic Republic that way if anything goes wrong one area getting re-generation whilst starving other areas of cash you get rid at the election box. Charles is just a figure head who if he ever becomes King will be an elderly man when he is crowned. What does anyone who lives and has been pampered all his life really know about real life? Its not like if he's skint he has to lend a tenner off his relatives now is it?

This is rather off-topic, but I need to explain.

It didn't take to long Darren to start to look on being a councillor as a 'bother'

This week I received a bundle of papers from Burnley County Court. My wife has filed for divorce, citing the amount of time I spend on my duties as a councillor. I have been thrown out of my home under threat of a possession order, and will now see my children only one day a week. You weren't to know this, but perhaps I might be forgiven for - just this once - describing the work as 'bother'. Of course, it's not bother. Getting divorced is bother. Being a councillor is actually very rewarding. It seems I'm only as human as everyone else after all.

At least they are consistent.

Anyone who claims always to be consistent can't have many principles, because principles clash. I could write a long list of mine, but the ones that are relevant here are:

1. Put Burnley first.
(Nos 2-36 go here)
37?. Abolish the monarchy.

It all depends on what order you want to put them in. It's a perfectly valid point of view to have them the other way around, but I've listed them the way I see them. I am perhaps accused of being inconsistent by welcoming the Prince. If I had the principles the other way around, the accusation would be that I claim to put Burnley first, but not when it compromises the drive to abolish the monarchy.

Life is full of compromises and one way or the other in this case one of them has to give way. Dave & Andy, perhaps we disagree on this fine point.

Thankfully, we agree about a lot more.

Cheers,
Darren

Darren, sorry to hear about your unfortunate present circumstances. I sincerely hope that things work out.

As you say, we disagree on very minor things and have a great deal of common ground. Hopefully you will be around as a councillor in my area for a long time.

God knows what ward you represent but i hope it's not mine with the drivel you post on here.Burnley is a slum? we have over 2.500 empty houses in the town that no-one wants because the population is decreasing every year .The only rise in the total since the so called 'riots' is in the Black population (councils own figure on their web-site )and also on the councils own survey 40 % of people would like to leave Burnley but can't because of the price of houses elsewhere and also they can't sell the house they have.So what do you people suggest?build some more houses lol;we have approx 13 pubs for sale and boarded up in the town centre so what do you people say ? build some pubs in the triangle lol; we have approx 26 empty shops in the town centre,so what do you people say ?lol build some shops in the weavers lol.need we say anymore councillor. The royal parasite managed to take a lot of money out of our Council taxes this week with the extra army of cleaners brought in to sweep the streets along his route and even take the Brown leaves of the trees on Belverdere road !! i kid you not i saw it with ny own eyes and asked ;not forgetting the extra police costs etc and the expenses that the liberal leaders will no doubt be claiming for attending the lunches on our behalf .
