Padiham yobs throwing stones at cars from bridge

STONE-throwing yobs are ‘putting lives at risk’ by targeting motorists — with a town mayor one of the victims.

More than a dozen incidents have been reported in recent days, one of which saw a car windscreen shattered.

The thugs have been throwing rocks and stones at vehicles passing below the former railway bridge in Green Lane, Padiham.

One incident saw the windscreen of a Ford Fiesta smashed, and the Mayor of Padiham, Coun Bob Clark, was given a fright when his van was struck by a missile.

Police said they had increased patrols in the area to try and catch the youths responsible and were taking the issue ‘very seriously’.

Coun Clark said: “It is very, very dangerous and could put lives at risk.

“I was driving my van when I heard a big bang on the roof. It didn’t cause any damage but it could have been much worse.

“It made one heck of a noise and it could easily distract a driver and cause an accident. That kind of thing can make you jump or lose concentration, and you start wondering what on earth has happened.

“Luckily it only hit my roof but had it hit the windscreen it could have been a nasty incident.”

Police are investigating the incidents. The bridge is now part of the Padiham Greenway, a footpath along the disused line.

Sgt Duncan Arthur said: “We are aware of reports of damage and the area is being included in anti-social behaviour patrols to try and apprehend the youths involved.

“We have already spoken to a number of youths following these patrols, although nobody has been spoken to with regards to these particular incidents.”

Coun Clark said: “The incidents are mostly isolated and are happening at weekends, often in the evenings, from people I have spoken to.

“During daylight the area is very popular with the Greenway and with the number of people using it it polices itself.

“But there are always some people who will look to cause trouble and do things like this.”

Anybody with information on the incidents should call police on 0845 1 253545.

Sadly this is a sympton of the meltdown of society!

I have been "bricked" twice while driving a Bus and "shot" in face from a distance with a BB gun quite recently. In the past I have a missile dropped on me from a bridge while riding a motorcycle. Luckily I managed to remain upright but I dread to think of this happening to a new rider. These incidents will continue as long as the authorities **** foot around and use the slightest excuse not to take action. Even if they do they yobs get a slap if that! Or....until moral values are restored in society!

You want to see the mess eggs make - the shells splinter and chip through the lacquer. One egg damge = full panel respray. Not cheap.
This is not low level antisocial behaviour it's criminal damage and should be vigourously policed.
I suppose this is difficult though when all the response policing is now run from Burnley leaving Padiham with little protection from the sort of mindless hooligans described in the above article.
Rather a similar situation to the reduction in police cover in Great Harwood.

Of course it's not an urgent matter! It's obviously more serious to drive a few yards without a seatbelt! I set off driving my car in Padiham while putting my seat belt on at the same time. I was chased (at 28mph) by a Police Van with Blue Lights flashing and sirens blaring! What a crazy world when Criminal Damage is not serious!

I got caught carrying a plastic bath in the back of a 4x4. "It would crush you if you had to brake hard" said the policeman as I pulled it out the back and held it in one hand. 3 points and £60 fine later, back it went and off I continued towards the tip.
Doing a fine job there, officer.

What exactly were you given a fixed penalty for?
