A MAN was in a coma and fighting for life last night following a ‘serious assault’ in Padiham.
Carlo Robinson, 48, suffered a serious head injury during an incident in the Melbourne Street area.
He remained in a critical condition at Salford Royal Hospital, police said.
Police were called to a house last Saturday to reports that a man had been assaulted the previous night.
Ryan Williamson, 30, of Ingham Street, Padiham, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
He appeared before Burnley Magistrates' Court yesterday and was remanded in custody for a bail hearing.
The court was told Mr Robinson was in a 'very bad way.'
Prosecutor Alex Mann said: "It's suggested that the likelihood is he won't pull through. He is in a coma and has got a bleed to the brain."
Williamson's case was sent to the crown court to be heard.
He granted bail until November 14, on condition he live at Cleveland Street, Colne, report to the police station there three times a week and obey a 7pm to 7am curfew and did not enter Padiham.
The prosecution said they would be appealing at the crown court and Williamson will be kept in custody until the bail hearing within the next 48 hours.
Police failed to release details of the incident until yesterday.
Residents in the ‘normally quiet’ Melbourne Street said they were ‘shocked’ and ‘concerned’ an incident has happened so close to their homes.
One person, who did not wish to be named, said: "Carlo is a really great guy.
“He is a well mannered, generous person who has been a good friend of mine for a long time. He would do anything for anyone."
A mother-of-one, who lives of Melbourne Street, who did not wish to be named, said: “I went out to pick my little boy up on Saturday about 4pm and when I came back the police were everywhere.
“It is terrible a man has been seriously hurt two doors from my home.”
A window at Mr Robinson’s property was boarded up yesterday. Police said it was damaged in the incident.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Gray said: “A number of enquiries have already taken place including CCTV and house to house enquiries.
“I would appeal to anyone who was in the Melbourne Street and Stockbridge Road area between 10:15pm and 10:30pm and witnessed anything to come forward and contact us on 08451 25 35 45 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
