Padiham Tesco store one step closer despite protests

PLANS for a Tesco superstore in Padiham are set to overcome their first hurdle next week.

The controversial proposal for a 30,000 square foot store, which would create 150 jobs, is to be heard by councillors on Burnley’s development control committee next Thursday.

And officers have recommended that the final decision be passed up to national Government level.

The ‘eco-store’ plans, for the former Baxi site in Wyre Street, have been heavily criticised by residents and traders, who launched a campaign to protect independent shops.

Cathy Ryder, head of planning and environment for the council, said some town centre businesses could close because of the store.

In a report on the plans she said: “A new foodstore would effectively function as part of the town centre and should encourage linked trips due to its good accessibility.

“The foodstore would represent a major positive investment in the town centre.

“The positive impacts of a new store need to be balanced against the potential negative impacts and it is possible that some existing shops will close following the opening of the store.”

A host of objections to the plans have been received, including a petition from the Padiham town centre partnership with 280 signatures, and around 600 pre-printed objections forms from local residents.

The Burnley Civic Trust is also opposing the plans, because it feels the store would change the character of Padiham “out of all recognition” and create increased levels of traffic on Burnley Road.

Deborah Hayeems, Tesco corporate affairs manager, said: “We believe the scheme will bring huge additional benefits to the rest of the town.”

I'd have thought an Aldi or Lidl, or maybe even a Netto would be more suitable for that area.

Stone Island, Blackburn. I have lived in Padiham all my life, I am educated, have a good job and occasionally shop at Aldi & Lidl but I find your comment disrespectful & offensive. What are you inferring? If you can't make a comment without being judgemental then please do not bother to comment at all!!!!

The trouble is Padiham is losing manufacturing space, but of course who cares. sadly the demise of manufacturing industry has been the destruction of the town. It needs investment but How much will a Tesco store bring? I am afraid Padiham like many other towns in east lancs will change for the worse.

I already shop at Tesco because Tesco does not close on Tuesday afternoons or close for lunch everyday like a certain butchers I could mention. People in Padiham vote with their feet and shop in shops that are open. Wake up Padiham shopkeepers give the public what they want and they will come to you.

Padiham town centre has done it self no favours like the comments above, for yrs they have half day closing on tuesday, & everything is shut from 12pm saturdays, now the shopkeepers are kicking up a fuss, too ltiitle too late I welcome the new tesco with open arms, Saves me travelling to burnley to buy cheap fuel, & groceries, The shops on the hill are derelict, & only fit for kebab meat selling, Maybe this is the eye opener the town needs,

I hope you were joking, Someone from Blackburn or Darwen saying Padiham is a dump, i'm not even from Padiham but compared to any area of Blackburn or Darwen, padiham would be like living in a high end upperclass village. Living in Blackburn is one step up from the streets

A new Tesco anywhere is a curse. Why do councils keep rolling over for these people? They are killing communities.

Won't find me in Blackburn Morrisons; full of dossers. (Bet you didn't look out of place in there)
.
Must admit though, some areas of Blackburn leave a lot to be desired at the moment, but i don't think any areas of our town are quite as bad as yours: Daneshouse, Duke Bar, Stoneyholme, Burnley Wood, Gannow Top etc. My god, those places are so dirty even the rats use skateboards!!!!

Tesco and Travellers, two moves that will ruin the town. It has so much potential not only from the locals but from surrounding districts, The only problem is the main street cuts the town in two otherwise I have always regarded it as attractive as Hebden Bridge for potential individual shops for shoppers.
