A MOTORIST has sustained serious injuries in a head-on collision between two cars in icy conditions.
Police closed both directions of the Accrington bypass, or A56, at around 4.35pm today after a Mini Cooper and a Vauxhall Corsa collided near to the Shuttleworth Hall link road close to junction eight of the M65 near Huncoat and Hapton.
The Vauxhall had been travelling in the Padiham direction and the Mini travelling in the opposite direction.
The female driver of the Vauxhall was taken by ambulance to the Royal Preston Hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the Mini was taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital and treated for minor injuries.
She was expected to leave hospital tonight.
Shuttleworth Hall Link Road was closed for two-and-a-half hours while police accident investigators carried out their work. Sergeant Gareth Hill from the Road Policing Unit said: “This is a very serious incident and I would appeal to anyone who saw what happened or who witnessed anything prior to the collision to come forward and contact me.
“At the moment I cannot say what caused this collision but the weather certainly will not have helped. I would reiterate our appeals throughout the week for motorists to drive with extreme care and caution.” Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 01282 425001.
