A MULTI-MILLION pound grant to protect a historic town from flooding and help spruce up it central area has been welcomed by its MP.

On Tuesday Lancashire Enterprise Partnership confirmed it will invest £4.9million on improvements to Padiham town centre enabling the development of 250 homes on the former Baxi factory.

The bulk of the cash will pay for new flood defences along the River Calder and Green Brook.

The remainder will boost the Townscape Heritage Initiative on ‘The Hill’.

Burnley MP Julie Cooper said: “This investment of £4.9 million is fantastic news for Padiham.

"Ever since the devastating floods of 2015 I have been campaigning for key flood protection works to be carried out and I am delighted the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership has allocated funds for this important work.

"The additional funding for the refurbishment of Padiham town centre will be welcomed by residents and local shopkeepers.”

The £4.9 million was approved by the LEP board from its Local Growth Fund on Tuesday night.
