MORE than 50 schools across East Lancashire were closed due to the snow yesterday - and more is expected over the next few days.

The Met Office issued a‘yellow’ warning for snow showers today and the warning will return on Friday as Storm Emma takes hold.

In a statement, the Met Office said: “The snow is expected between 00:05am on February 28 and then 11.55pm on the same day. Heavy snow showers are expected on Wednesday.

“There is the potential for travel delays on roads, with some stranded vehicles and passengers, as well as delays or cancellations to rail and air travel.

“Some rural communities could become cut off. Power cuts may also occur and other services, such as mobile phones, may be affected.”

Lancashire Telegraph readers made use of the school closures by enjoying their time in the snow.

With a further cold spell forecasted, motorists are being urged to be careful on the road.

Cllr Hussain Akhtar, who represents the Shearbrow ward, praised Blackburn with Darwen Council for their good work gritting road.

He said: “On Shearbrow it is very hilly but they had done a great job on the roads and even the side streets.”

Kate Rock-Rees, of Goodyear Tyres, said: “Preparation is key for motorists all year round, but particularly during winter when road conditions are harsher and accidents are more likely.

“Simply checking you have adequate tread on your tyres will ensure your car will grip better when driving on ice and snow.

“If you live in an area that is commonly known for extreme winter conditions – where temperatures are regularly below seven degrees - you should consider changing to winter tyres.”

Meanwhile today (Wednesday), there are two closures in Burnley which are: Burnley Rockwood Nursery School - Excessive Staff Absence AM: All - whole school closure and PM: All - whole school closure 

Burnley Springfield Community Primary School was shut for the same reasons and times.

Elsewhere in Pendle Brierfield Woodfield Nursery School is closed because of the adverse Weather, and icy road conditions and snow making it unsafe to get to school and also staff difficulties in getting to school would mean safe ratios for children may not be met AM: Nursery - whole school closure
