A WARNING has been issued about candle safety after a family-of-four’s home caught fire.

The incident happened in Green Street in Padiham at around 1.30am today and two fire crews were called.

Residents said they were worried after hearing fire engine sirens in the early hours of the morning.

Firefighters said they received a call from the family after a smoke alarm alerted them to the blaze in the living room of their home.

Families in the street were awoken by the firefighters attending the scene.

A Green Street resident said: “I heard the fire engines coming about 1.30am, it gave me a real shock.

“I just didn’t know what to think, you don’t normally see these sort of things.

“You just have to hope that everyone is fine, especially the fact children were in the house.

“Hopefully not too much damage was done either.

Fire crews from Burnley and Padiham attended and were at the scene for approximately two hours.

The fire was out on arrival, however firefighters had to use a ventilation unit to clear the property of smoke.

A resident of nearby St Anne Street said: “There was quite a lot of smoke.

“I was woke up by all the fire engines and then saw what was happening.

“It’s scary. When you see something like this all sort of thoughts come to your head, you think it’s really serious.

“It’s just a relief not too much damage was done and that nobody was badly hurt.

“I just hope the kids aren’t too shaken up.”

Two adults and two children were in the house but no injuries were reported, firefighters said.

Ambulance crews also attended and one woman had to be treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.

The blaze was started by a candle, and the fire service has issued a warning over how to use them in the home.

A Lancashire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “It was caused by a candle being left unattended in the living room.

“People should make sure candles are out when there is nobody in the room.

“It is also important to consider the surface the candle is on, it should not be on plastic or wood.

“There was a small amount of damage done to the living room.

“Nobody was injured but one women was given precautionary first aid.”
