THE gym at Padiham Leisure Centre is set to receive a £155,000 revamp.

Burnley Council is to vote tomorrow on the funding to replace equipment that is up to eight years old.

The money would include a new ‘spinning’ bike initiative, a class-based exercise involving specially-designed gear-resistance bicycles.

Cllr John Harbour, deputy leader of the council, said the refurbishments are a step forward for the centre.

He said: “The current equipment is around seven or eight years old, it needs changing.

“We wanted to make sure the facilities are updated on a regular basis.

“Our members are asking for new pieces of equipment and we want to give it to them.

“Making our centres more appealing and attractive will encourage people to take part in fitness and have a healthy lifestyle.

“To make them attractive we need to make sure the gym is in keeping with the times and as good as, if not better, than other centres.

“It will also help improve their social lives.

“Exercising with friends is a great way of helping people go back again.

The Park Road centre undertook a massive makeover in 2008, costing £1.25million.

It boasts exercise equipment, a separate kids gym for eight to 14-year-olds, a dance studio, sauna, a five-a-side football pitch and a health studio.

The full council will be recommended to establish a new budget in the 2017/18 capital programme for the equipment.

It will be funded through contributions from the leisure trust and selling the old gym equipment.

Cllr Harbour said: “The spinning bikes are a really exciting, they’ve become very popular with other centres and now our members will get to enjoy them.

“The Padiham Leisure Centre is well used by a lot of people, everyone has a link to it.

“We are always looking to get people exercising and this is another great way of doing that.

“I will be looking forward to seeing the new kit in all its glory.”

It is thought the refurbishments will start as soon as possible once approved by the council.

The meeting will take place at Burnley Town Hall in Manchester Road at 6.30pm.

Everyone is invited to oversee council business.
