A SEQUENCE dancing group has claimed a beer festival held on its cherished sprung dancefloor has left it ‘slippy and dangerous’.

The Padiham and District Pensioners’ Club meets to dance at Padiham Town Hall’s function room three times a week, with around 40 older people attending each session.

The group says the venue is perfect for its needs as it has a rare ‘sprung’ floor.

However, members of the group said the condition of the floor deteriorated after a beer festival resulted in spillages on the floor.

Hundreds attended the two-day event on March 22 and 23, with the proceeds donated to the Padiham mayor’s charity fund.

It was deemed a ‘fantastic event’ with more than 30 ales from 12 separate breweries on offer as well as locally-produced ciders.

Dance club attendee Elizabeth Naisbitt, 63, from Gawthorpe, acknowledged that the Town Hall should be used for many events but said the festival had had an effect on the floor.

She said: “What hasn’t been reported is the fact that, due to the beer spilled onto the rather luxurious dance floor, it has been spoilt for the people who gather there for dancing.

“Those maintaining the floor have done their best to clean it but it’s just not the same.

“Not only does it provide dancing, which is good exercise, it is a social outlet for elderly people who otherwise would have no social life at all.

“There is very little in Padiham for the 60+ group, but the dancing is one of them.

“Now the floor is very slippery and positively dangerous especially to one of our most beloved characters who is 105 years of age, but still loves to dance.”

Alan Ravenscroft, a member of Padiham Town Council, said: “I’m saddened to hear that some of the dance club members are dissatisfied with the condition of the floor.

“They of course are a valued group.

“The council will look into the matter.”
