THE new Mayor of Burnley was installed at a ceremony at the town hall.

Coun Ida Carmichael will be joined in her role by her husband and Consort, Gavin, and her Mayoress, Joan Heginbotham.

Coun Carmichael joined the council as a member for Whittlefield with Ightenhill in 1998.

She said: "I know the coming year will be challenging but we hope to be able to attend as many events as possible.

"We look forward to the opportunity to support as much of Burnley as possible."

Her mayoral charities for the year will be the Pendleside Hospice and the Breast Cancer Service for Burnley.

During the mayor ceremony Council leader Gordon Birtwistle thanked outgoing mayor Peter McCann and his mayoresses, his mother Mary and daughter Jenny.

How much does all this small town crapola cost us hard-pressed council tax payers each year? All we hear about are spending cuts and increased charges, yet I've never heard a word about the mayoral budget being cutback. Maybe it's because the councillors enjoy the civic p1ss ups like the mayors ball etc.
Exactly - an unnecessary position and a waste of OUR money.
